Short answer: yes — but it depends on what kind of trip you’re expecting.

We’ve spent extended time here during the winters of 2023 and 2026, and one of the biggest things I noticed is just how quickly Puerto Peñasco is evolving. What used to feel like a quieter, slightly sleepy beach town is now growing into a much more developed destination, with new restaurants, updated resorts, and more activities popping up each year.

At the same time, it still holds on to that relaxed, seasonal vibe, especially in the winter months, when a huge wave of retirees and snowbirds come down to stay for weeks or even months. You’ll notice it right away in places like Sandy Beach and around the Malecon, where the pace of life feels slower and more community-driven than a typical tourist hotspot.

If you’re coming for a quick, easy beach trip, especially from Arizona, it’s absolutely worth it. The convenience alone is hard to beat. You can drive in, skip the airport hassle, and be on the beach the same day.

That said, this isn’t a luxury Mexican resort town like Cabo or Cancun.

The beaches are beautiful, but the water isn’t always crystal clear. The town still has a bit of a rough-around-the-edges feel in some areas, especially outside the main tourist zones like Sandy Beach or the Malecon.

But honestly, that’s part of the appeal.

Puerto Peñasco feels more laid-back and less commercialized, which makes it a great option if you’re looking for a casual beach getaway without the crowds or high prices of bigger destinations.

In my experience, it’s best for:

• Weekend trips or short getaways
• Travelers who want a relaxed beach vibe
• Snowbirds or longer stays during the winter season
• Anyone driving in from Arizona (there’s a reason it’s called Arizona’s beach)

It might not be the right fit if you’re expecting:

• Perfectly polished tourist infrastructure
• A packed itinerary of high-end attractions

How Many Days Do You Need in Puerto Peñasco?

For most people, 2 to 3 days is the perfect amount of time in Puerto Peñasco, especially if you’re coming for a quick beach getaway.

But our experience here ended up being very different.

When we first visited, we came down with an RV group, planning to stay for just 2 weeks.  We ended up extending another 3 weeks because we loved it that much. Coming back again in 2026, we saw even more reasons why people stay longer than they originally planned.

The truth is, how long you should stay really depends on the kind of trip you want.

2–3 Days: Perfect for a Weekend Trip

If you’re driving in from Arizona, this is the most common option.  You’ll have enough time to:

• Relax on Sandy Beach
• Explore the Malecon
• Try a couple of restaurants and bars
• Do one or two activities, like a sunset cruise or ATV ride
• This is ideal if you just want a simple, low-effort getaway.

4–5 Days: A More Relaxed Experience

If you want to slow things down a bit, staying 4–5 days gives you a much better pace.

When I’ve stayed longer, this is when Puerto Peñasco really starts to click. You’re not just checking things off a list; you actually settle into the vibe of the town.  You’ll have time to:

• Visit multiple beaches
• Try more excursions or activities
• Enjoy slower mornings and sunsets without feeling rushed

1 Week or More: Where Puerto Peñasco Really Shines

This is honestly where Puerto Peñasco stands out, especially in the winter.

There’s a huge community of retirees, RV travelers, and snowbirds who stay for weeks or even months at a time. After spending extended time here myself, I completely understand why. The pace is relaxed, the cost of living is lower, and it’s easy to fall into a routine of beach days, dining out, and just enjoying the weather.

My Recommendation

If it’s your first trip, I’d recommend at least 3 days to get a feel for the area without rushing.

But if you have the flexibility, staying longer, even just 4–5 days, makes a big difference. Puerto Peñasco is one of those places that grows on you the longer you stay… and don’t be surprised if you end up extending your trip as I did.

If you’re visiting during peak seasons or weekends, it’s a good idea to book your stay in advance, especially around Sandy Beach, where the best spots tend to fill up quickly.

Where to Stay in Puerto Peñasco

Where you stay in Puerto Peñasco really depends on how you like to travel. After spending extended time here in an RV, I saw firsthand just how different the experience can be depending on where you base yourself.

Best Areas for Hotels and Resorts

If you’re visiting for a short trip or weekend getaway, most people stay in the Sandy Beach area.  This is where you’ll find:

• Beachfront resorts
• Condos with pools
• Easy access to restaurants and bars

Even though I was traveling by RV, I checked out quite a few of the resorts in this area, and it’s definitely the most convenient place to stay if you want everything close by.

RV Camping in Puerto Peñasco

If you’re traveling by RV, Puerto Peñasco is actually a fantastic destination.

When we came down here the first time, we joined an RV group through Escapees.  Our plan was to stay for 2 weeks.  We loved the area so much that we ended up extending our stay by another 3 weeks.

Traveling with a Group (Mix of RV + Hotel Stays)

One thing I’ve realized after spending extended time here is that Puerto Peñasco actually works really well for groups traveling in different ways.

For example, when we stay in an RV campground, there are often hotels or condos right nearby. So even if some people in your group don’t RV, or are flying in from farther away,  it’s still easy to stay close to each other.

We are already planning a trip where friends will fly in and stay at a nearby hotel while we stay in the campground, which makes it easy to meet up during the day, go out for dinner, and still have different types of accommodations.

This setup works especially well for:

• Friends or family traveling from different parts of the country
• Groups with a mix of RV travelers and non-RV travelers
• Longer stays where flexibility matters

It’s a really underrated part of Puerto Peñasco.  You don’t all have to travel the same way to enjoy the trip together.

There’s a lot more to do in Puerto Peñasco than most people expect — especially if you’ve only heard of it as a quick beach getaway. After spending extended time here in both 2023 and 2026, I was surprised by how much the town has grown, with everything from laid-back beach days and local food spots to tours, nightlife, and off-road adventures.

Below are the best things to do in Puerto Peñasco based on real experience, including the must-dos, a few underrated spots, and some that are only worth it depending on how you like to travel.

  1.  Relax on Sandy Beach

If it’s your first time in Puerto Peñasco, this is where you’ll probably end up spending most of your time, and for good reason.

When we stayed nearby, this was by far the most convenient area. You’ve got beach access, restaurants, and everything within walking distance, which makes it really easy to just settle in and enjoy the day.

It can get busy on weekends, though, so I’d recommend heading out early if you want a quieter experience.

2. Go Tidepooling and Seashell Hunting in Cholla Bay

Cholla Bay is one of the most unique areas to visit in Puerto Peñasco, especially at low tide. If you’ve only spent time around Sandy Beach, this side of town feels completely different.

I’ve been there at low tide, and it’s one of those things you really need to see with your own eyes. As the water pulls back, the bay transforms, exposing a rocky shoreline filled with tide pools, shells, and little pockets of sea life that stay hidden for the rest of the day.

I’m not one to walk out on the rocks myself because they can get slippery, but friends I was with had a great time exploring the tide pools while I sat at the Oyster Bar with a margarita and took in the view. Honestly, that’s a pretty great way to experience Cholla Bay, too.

If you want to go tidepooling here, make sure you time your visit for low tide. Otherwise, you’ll miss what makes this area so special.

This is a great stop if you:

• want to see a different side of Puerto Peñasco
• enjoy shell hunting or exploring tide pools
• prefer a more laid-back outing with a good food-and-drinks option nearby

Even if you don’t plan to climb around the rocks, Cholla Bay is still worth visiting for the scenery alone.

3. Celebrate Sunset in Puerto Peñasco

One thing you absolutely shouldn’t skip in Puerto Peñasco is the sunset.  It’s easily one of the highlights of being here.

I’ve watched more than a few sunsets here, and every time it feels a little different. The sun drops right into the Sea of Cortez, and the sky can shift quickly from soft yellows to deep oranges, reds, and even purples. Some nights, it really does look like the sky is on fire.

One of the best places to watch it is from a rooftop, especially the Skybar. From there, you can actually see the sun set into the water, and at the same time, the sky behind you starts lighting up in completely different colors. Off to the side, you even get views of the desert catching those same sunset tones. It’s one of those rare spots where you can see everything happening at once, and it’s pretty incredible.

That said, there’s no one “right” way to experience it. I’ve also watched it from the beach and from campgrounds with neighbors, and those quieter moments can be just as memorable.

If you want something more social, head to the Malecon or a rooftop bar. But if you prefer something low-key, just grab a chair on the beach and take it all in.

No matter how you do it, make time for it — it’s one of those simple experiences that ends up being one of the most memorable parts of a trip to Puerto Peñasco.

4. Get a Beach Massage

If you want to fully relax while you’re in Puerto Peñasco, a beach massage is one of the easiest ways to do it.

I saw this a lot along the resort beaches,  masseuses walking by with portable tables, ready to set up right on the sand. It’s one of those things that feels a little spontaneous, but ends up being a really memorable experience.

There’s something different about getting a massage with the sound of the waves in the background and a breeze coming off the water. It’s a lot more casual than a traditional spa, but that’s part of what makes it fun.

Prices are usually pretty affordable, and you can often just flag someone down if you’re interested. If you don’t see anyone on your beach, most of the nearby spas can also arrange a beach massage or point you in the right direction.

This is a great option if:

• You want a low-effort, relaxing activity
  You’re already spending time at the beach
  You’re looking for something a little different than a typical spa experience

The water here is usually calm and fairly shallow compared to other beach destinations, which makes it feel a lot more approachable. I noticed this right away around the main beach areas, where you’ll see people of all ages out on the water trying different activities.

If you want something a little more active than just sitting on the beach, these are some of the most popular options to try.

5.  The Banana Boat Experience

If you’re looking for something fun and a little unpredictable, the banana boat is one of the most popular activities on the beach.

You’ll usually see them set up right along the main beach areas.  It’s a long inflatable tube being pulled behind a speedboat, with a group of people trying to hang on as long as they can.

It’s simple: you put on a life vest, climb on, and hold tight while the boat speeds up and starts making turns. At some point, someone is probably going to fall off, and that’s honestly part of the fun.

Because it holds a group, this is a great option if you’re traveling with family or friends and want something quick and entertaining without a lot of planning.

You can usually book this directly on the beach, and it’s easy to join without needing to reserve in advance.

6. Rent a Jet Ski

If you want something a little more active, renting a jet ski is one of the easiest ways to get out on the water in Puerto Peñasco.

You’ll see rentals set up right along Sandy Beach, so it’s pretty simple to walk up and get started without much planning. That’s part of what makes this a good option if you decide last-minute that you want to do something beyond just sitting on the beach.

One of the best times to go is later in the day, when the sun starts to set. Paddling while the sky shifts through different colors gives a completely different feel than being on the beach.

There’s also a chance you might spot dolphins out in the water. It doesn’t happen every time, but it’s one of those moments people get excited about when it does.

I didn’t see many operators directly on the beach, but I did notice several options around the Malecon. You can also ask at your hotel front desk or concierge, which is often the easiest way to find a reputable company and get set up.

Once you’re in the air, it’s actually smoother than you might expect. The takeoff and landing are the most exciting parts, but after that, it’s more about taking in the view than holding on for dear life.

This is a good option if:

• You want something a little more adventurous
• You’re comfortable with heights
• You’re looking for a unique perspective of the area

If you’re unsure, it’s worth watching a few people go up first to get a feel for how it works before booking.

9. Try Kite Surfing on the Beaches

Kite surfing is one of the more advanced watersports you’ll see around Puerto Peñasco, and it definitely stands out when you’re on the beach.

I didn’t try this myself, but I saw several people out on the water using large kites to glide across the surface, especially on windier days. It’s one of those activities that immediately catches your attention because of how fast they move and how much control it seems to take.

The combination of steady ocean breeze and shallow water makes this area a good spot for it, but it’s not really something you can just jump into without experience.

If you’re interested in trying it, you’ll likely need to book a lesson or go with a guide rather than attempting it on your own.

This is a good option if:

• You already have experience with kite surfing
• You’re looking for a more advanced water activity
• You’re interested in taking a lesson while you’re here

Even if you don’t plan to try it, it’s still fun to watch from the beach — especially when the wind picks up, and more people head out on the water.

10.  Go Snorkeling

Snorkeling is something many people are curious about in Puerto Peñasco, especially given how calm and shallow the water can be in certain areas.

That said, it really depends on conditions. The water isn’t always crystal clear, but on calmer days, you can still get decent visibility around rocky areas where marine life tends to gather.

I didn’t personally go snorkeling here, but it’s a common activity you’ll see offered through resorts and local tour operators. If you’re interested, the easiest way to get started is to ask your hotel concierge or book through a reputable tour company.

If you decide to go on your own, make sure to check the tide charts. The tides here can change quickly, and it’s possible to end up farther out than you expected, especially around sandbars.

This is a good option if:

• You enjoy being in the water and exploring below the surface
• You’re already planning to spend time near rocky areas
• You prefer a slower, more relaxed activity

Just keep your expectations realistic.  Snorkeling here can be enjoyable, but it’s not the same as destinations known specifically for crystal-clear water.

11.  Go Scuba Diving in the Sea of Cortez

If you want to explore below the surface, scuba diving is another option in Puerto Peñasco.  This is a bit more involved than the other activities on this list.

The Sea of Cortez is known for its marine life, and while conditions can vary, there are opportunities to see fish and other marine life, especially in areas with more structure, such as reefs.

I didn’t go diving here myself, but it’s something that’s available through local dive shops and tour operators. If you’re already certified, you can book guided dives, and if you’re new to it, there are courses available where you can learn and get certified during your trip.

This is a good option if:

• You’re already scuba certified
• You’re interested in learning to dive
• You’re looking for a more immersive water experience

Just keep in mind that visibility can vary depending on conditions, so it’s worth checking with a local operator to see what the current conditions are like before booking.

Take A Boat Tour in Puerto Penasco

Getting out on the water is one of the best ways to experience Puerto Peñasco, and there are quite a few boat tour options depending on what kind of vibe you’re looking for.

I saw everything from laid-back sunset cruises to full-on party boats, and it really comes down to whether you want something relaxing, social, or a little more unique.

Here are a few of the most popular options:

12.  Join a Booze Cruise

If you’re looking for a more social, high-energy activity, the booze cruises are a popular choice.

These are exactly what they sound like — music playing, drinks flowing, and a group of people out on the water just having a good time. You’ll usually find beer and margaritas included, along with a pretty lively atmosphere.

This is a good option if:

• You’re traveling with friends
• You want something more upbeat
• You don’t mind a party-style environment

If you’re looking for something quiet or relaxing, this probably isn’t the best fit — but if you’re in the mood for it, it can be a fun afternoon.

13.  Take a Pirate Cruise

The pirate cruise is one of the more unique boat experiences in Puerto Peñasco, and it’s especially popular with families.

You’ll head out on a themed boat with a full crew in character, and they usually include food, drinks, and entertainment along the way. It’s a bit more structured than other tours, which can be a plus if you’re traveling with kids or want something more interactive.

If you go on one of the sunset cruises, this is where it really stands out. As the sun goes down, the boat lights up with twinkle lights, and they even fire off a cannon, which adds to the whole experience.

From what I saw, it’s less about the sailing itself and more about everything happening on board.

This is a good option if:

It’s definitely more about the atmosphere than a quiet cruise, but that’s what makes it fun.

These tend to feel much calmer and smoother than other boats, making it easier to just sit back and enjoy the ride. From what I saw, this is more about the overall experience, being out on the water, taking in the views, and enjoying the slower pace.

Some cruises include drinks, music, or sunset options, but even with that, it still feels more laid-back than something like a booze cruise.

Whale watching was easily one of my favorite experiences in Puerto Peñasco.

If you’re visiting between January and March, there’s a good chance you’ll be able to see whales migrating through the Sea of Cortez.  You might even see mothers and calves traveling together.

There’s definitely some waiting involved, since you’re watching for movement out on the water, but that’s part of the experience. When you finally spot one! Whether it’s a spout in the distance or a whale coming up to the surface, it makes it all worth it.

I’d recommend bringing binoculars and sunscreen, since you’ll be out on the water for a while and the whales aren’t always right next to the boat.  If you don’t already have them, these are the ones I use:

From what I saw, these cruises tend to be more relaxed than the party-style boats, which makes them a good fit if you’re looking for something quieter.

It’s a great option if:

• You’re traveling as a couple
• You want something a little more special than a typical evening out
• You enjoy a slower, more laid-back experience

If you’re deciding between different boat tours, this is one of the better choices when you want something focused more on the experience than the activity.

Go Fishing in Puerto Penasco

Fishing is a big part of life in Puerto Peñasco, and whether you’re experienced or just curious to try it, there are a few different ways to get out on the water (or stay on shore) and give it a shot.

I noticed it everywhere, from boats heading out in the morning to people casting lines right from the beach.

17. Try Deep Sea Fishing in Puerto Penasco

If you want the full experience, deep-sea fishing charters are the way to go.

These trips take you farther out into the Sea of Cortez, where you’ll have a chance to catch fish like sea bass, grouper, and red snapper. Most charters provide everything you need: rods, bait, and a crew to help you along the way.

One thing that stood out to me is how hands-on the crews are. Even if you’ve never fished before, they’ll walk you through it and help you along the way.

They’ll also clean your catch and pack it on ice when you return, making it easy to take it back and enjoy it later.

This is a good option if:

• You want a guided, full experience
• You’re interested in catching larger fish
• You don’t mind spending several hours (or more) out on the water

18.  Go Surf Fishing

If you prefer something more low-key, surf fishing is a much easier way to try fishing without booking a tour.

You’ll see people fishing right from the beach, piers, and docks, and it’s something you can do at your own pace. Depending on the day, people catch fish such as snapper, triggerfish, and other local species.

One of my favorites is Jessy’s Fish Market, where you can pick up fresh shrimp that’s already cleaned and ready to cook.

If you’re looking for something a little more active beyond the beach and water, there are plenty of options around Puerto Peñasco to keep things interesting.

19. Adventure on an ATV Tour

If you want to explore beyond the main beach areas, renting an ATV is one of the more popular ways to do it.

You’ll see people riding out on the sand dunes and heading toward more rugged areas like the rocky coastline near Cholla Bay. It’s a completely different experience compared to staying around Sandy Beach, and it gives you a chance to see more of the desert landscape.

For more experienced riders, Competition Hill is a well-known spot.  It’s a steep sand dune that’s popular for testing your skills.

One thing to be aware of is where you can and can’t ride. ATVs are not allowed on the beaches near Sandy Beach or Los Conchas, and they’re also restricted on main streets in town. From what I’ve seen, this is enforced, and people do get ticketed.

Riding at night is also prohibited, so you’ll want to plan it for the day.

This is a good option if:

• You want something more adventurous
• You enjoy off-road riding
• You’re looking to explore beyond the main tourist areas

Just make sure to follow local rules and ride safely — the terrain can change quickly depending on where you go.

I saw options for riding along the beach as well as through town near the Malecon and Calle 13, which gives you a mix of views depending on the route you choose.

Sunset rides along the shoreline seem to be one of the more popular choices, and it’s easy to see why.  Being out on the sand as the light changes gives a completely different feel than just watching from the beach.
There are also rides that head out toward the desert areas, where things are quieter and more open if you’re looking for something more low-key.

These small aircraft take off right from the beach, and within minutes you’re up in the air with a full view of the shoreline, resorts, and the Sea of Cortez stretching out below.

I saw these flying along the beach, and it definitely catches your attention when one goes up. It’s not something you see at most beach destinations, which makes it stand out as an unusual experience.

The flights are piloted, so you’re not controlling anything yourself.  This means you can just take in the view (and get some great photos or video while you’re up there).

This is a good option if:

• You want something a little different from typical tours
• You’re comfortable being up in the air
• You’re looking for a unique way to see the coastline

It’s not for everyone, but if you’re up for it, it’s one of the more memorable things you can do here.

22.  Play Pickleball

Pickleball has really taken off in Puerto Peñasco, and it’s a fun way to stay active while you’re here.

I noticed courts in quite a few places, and it seems to be a popular activity with both visitors and long-term snowbirds.

Duke’s Restaurant is one of the main spots, with a strong pickleball community and an indoor court where people regularly meet up to play. It’s a good place to jump in if you’re looking for a more social game.  The town has also added new pickleball courts downtown, which makes it even easier to find a place to play.

This is a good option if:

• You already play and want to keep up with it while traveling
• You’re staying at an RV park or nearby accommodations
• You’re looking for something active that’s still pretty low-key

Even if you’re new to it, it’s easy to pick up and a fun way to meet people while you’re in town.

23. Play Golf in Puerto Peñasco

If you’re a golfer, Puerto Peñasco has a few solid course options — and what makes them stand out is the scenery. Several of the courses offer views of the Sea of Cortez, which gives them a completely different feel from your typical round of golf.

Here are a few of the main courses in the area:

Vidanta Golf Puerto Peñasco
This is one of the more well-known courses, designed by Jack Nicklaus and Jack Nicklaus II. It’s located at the Mayan Palace Resort and has some great ocean views along the course. You’ll also find full amenities here, including a pro shop, locker rooms, and a lounge.

The Links at Las Palomas Beach & Golf Resort
This is one of the most popular courses in Puerto Peñasco, especially because of its location near Sandy Beach. It’s a good option if you’re staying nearby and want something convenient. The course also has a putting green, a pro shop, and a casual snack bar.

The Club at Islas del Mar
This course is known for being a bit more challenging, with water features and views of the Sea of Cortez and nearby lagoons. It technically plays as a 9-hole course with multiple tee boxes, which gives you a different experience each time around.

Casa Blanca Golf & Villas (Mini Golf)
If you’re not looking for a full round, Casa Blanca has a mini golf course that’s a fun, casual option — especially if you’re traveling with family.

24.  Go Shopping in Puerto Penasco

If you need to pick up groceries, souvenirs, or just want to wander around for a bit, Puerto Peñasco has a good mix of shopping options depending on what you’re looking for.
I found that most things are easy to access, whether you’re staying near the resorts, in town, or at an RV park.

Rodeo Drive (Puerto Peñasco)
This is one of the more enjoyable places to walk around and browse. It’s lined with small artisan shops selling everything from handmade items to clothing and souvenirs.
It’s a good place to take your time, look around, and pick up something a little more unique. After walking through the shops, grabbing a margarita or snack nearby makes it an easy way to spend an afternoon.

Malecon (Boardwalk Area)
The Malecon is probably the most lively shopping area, especially later in the day.
You’ll find a mix of small shops, vendors, and kiosks selling jewelry, clothing, and souvenirs. It’s more about the atmosphere here — walking around, seeing what catches your eye, and enjoying the energy as it picks up toward sunset.

Walmart (and Sam’s Club)
If you need something familiar or forgot to pack essentials, Walmart has just about everything you’d expect.
It’s convenient, but keep in mind that some items may be a little different from what you’re used to in the U.S.

Super Ley
This is another grocery option that’s worth checking out, especially for fresh items. The bakery here stood out to me — it’s a good place to grab fresh bread or something quick.

Local Fruterías
The smaller neighborhood fruit markets are some of the most convenient places to stop when you just need a few things.
They’re easy to find around town and are great for picking up fresh fruit or quick ingredients without making a full grocery store run.

25.  Walk the Malecon (Boardwalk Area)

The Puerto Peñasco Malecon is one of the main gathering spots in town and easily one of the best places to spend a few hours.

It has a similar feel to a beach boardwalk, where you can walk, bike, browse shops, or just sit and take in the view. I found it’s a great place to slow down a bit and just see what’s going on around you.

On weekends, the energy really picks up. It’s common to hear multiple mariachi bands playing at once, creating what feels like a “battle of the bands” along the Malecon. People gather around, and you’ll see families and couples dancing right there in the street.

If you can, head down a little before sunset. It’s a good time to grab a drink, watch the sun go down, and then stay as the area gets more lively in the evening.

From there, it’s easy to walk to nearby restaurants or continue exploring the area.

26.  Experience The Puerto Penasco Nightlife

When the sun goes down, Puerto Peñasco has a lively nightlife scene, but the experience can vary quite a bit depending on where you go.

I found that some of the best spots are actually around the Sandy Beach resorts and the newer bars closer to Cholla Bay. These areas tend to have a more relaxed atmosphere, with live music, good drinks, and a setting where you can enjoy the evening without it feeling too overwhelming.

You’ll still find plenty of places with bands and dancing throughout town, so it’s not hard to find something that fits your style.

Calle 13 is where things get more intense, especially later at night and on weekends. It’s much more crowded, with a rowdier vibe and more adult-oriented nightlife.

If you’re looking for something more laid-back, you may prefer sticking to the resort areas or newer bar scenes instead.

Like anywhere, it’s best to stay aware of your surroundings and choose the areas that match the kind of night you’re looking for.

27.  Dine at Some of the Best Restaurants in Puerto Penasco

Dining out in Puerto Peñasco is easy — there’s a wide range of options depending on what you’re in the mood for.

You’ll find everything from Sonoran hot dog stands and churro carts to more upscale restaurants with ocean views. One thing I noticed is how many new places are opening, so there’s always something new to try.

La Casa del Capitan
This is one of my favorite spots, mainly for the view. It sits above the city, so you get a great view of the water, which is perfect at sunset. The guacamole here is also worth ordering.

Pane e Vino
This is another solid option if you want something different from seafood. It’s a good pick for Italian and a change of pace from typical beach dining.

Cabo Taco
For something more casual, Cabo Taco is one of my go-to spots for lunch. The crispy shrimp tacos are a standout, and it’s an easy, no-frills place to stop during the day.

Pollo Lucas
If you’re looking for takeout or something quick, Pollo Lucas is a reliable option. It’s simple, good, and convenient.

There are plenty of other restaurants around town, but these are a few that stood out to me, depending on what kind of meal you’re looking for.

 Things To Do In Puerto Penasco: Specialty Tours

If you’re looking to go beyond the beach and typical activities, there are a few specialty tours that take you a bit farther out and offer a completely different experience.
These tend to be more about nature, wildlife, and exploring areas you wouldn’t reach on your own.

28. Visit Isla San Jorge (Bird Island)

One of the more unique tours from Puerto Peñasco is a trip out to Isla San Jorge, also known as Bird Island.

It’s located about 30 miles offshore, and from what I’ve seen, it’s one of the best ways to experience wildlife in the area. Tours take you out by boat, where you can often see sea lions, dolphins, and a variety of birds around the island.  Some tours also include time for kayaking, snorkeling, or just being out on the water near the island.

This is a good option if:

• You enjoy wildlife and nature
• You’re looking for something beyond the main beach areas
• You don’t mind spending a good portion of the day on a boat

Because it’s farther out, this is more of a planned activity rather than something you can do last-minute — but it’s one of the more memorable experiences available from Puerto Peñasco.

29.  Visit El Pinacate Biosphere Reserve

If you want to see something completely different from the beaches of Puerto Peñasco, El Pinacate Biosphere Reserve is one of the most unique places in the area.

Located just outside of town, this UNESCO World Heritage Site was formed by volcanic activity, creating massive craters and a landscape that feels almost otherworldly. From what I’ve seen, it really does resemble the surface of the moon in certain areas.

There are several volcanic craters throughout the reserve, and while they’re dormant, the scale of them is impressive when you see them in person.

This is a good option if:

• You want to explore beyond the beach
• You’re interested in nature or geology
• You’re looking for something quieter and less touristy

It’s also worth noting that this area is protected and still being studied, so it’s important to be respectful and follow any guidelines while visiting.

Because it’s outside of town, this is something you’ll want to plan ahead for rather than doing spontaneously.

30. Visit CEDO and the Estuary

If you’re interested in learning more about the natural environment around Puerto Peñasco, CEDO (the Intercultural Center for the Study of Deserts and Oceans) is a great place to start.

It focuses on both the desert and marine ecosystems in the area and offers a variety of tours and educational experiences, including estuary excursions, kayaking, tidepooling, and even visits to an oyster farm.

When I visited, the center was actually closing, so we didn’t get to fully explore it. We did walk around a bit and saw the large whale replica and trails near the center, which gives you an idea of what the area is about.

From there, we headed over to the nearby estuary, and that ended up being the highlight.  In my opinion, it’s one of the most beautiful beaches in Puerto Peñasco. It’s quieter, more natural, and feels completely different from the main resort areas.

This is a good option if:

• You’re interested in nature and ecosystems
• You want to get away from the main beach crowds
• You’re looking for something a little more peaceful and scenic

If you go, I’d recommend giving yourself enough time to explore both the center and the surrounding estuary area — even if, like me, you end up spending more time outside than inside.

31.   Visit an Oyster Farm

If you’re looking for something a little different, visiting one of the oyster farms near Puerto Peñasco is a unique experience, especially if you enjoy fresh seafood.

We didn’t take a full tour, but we did stop at one for lunch, and it turned out to be one of the more memorable meals of the trip. The oysters are about as fresh as it gets, and you’re eating them right where they’re harvested.

It’s a much more casual setting than a typical restaurant, but that’s part of the appeal. Sitting there, right by the water, with oysters coming straight from the source, feels very different from dining in town.

Some locations also offer tours where you can learn more about how oyster farming works in the area, but even just stopping by for a meal is worth it.

This is a good option if:

• You enjoy fresh seafood
• You want a more local, low-key experience
• You’re looking for something outside the main tourist areas

It’s not something everyone thinks to do, but it’s definitely worth adding to your list if you have the time.

32. Visit Manny’s Tequila Factory

If you’re looking for something fun and a little different, Manny’s Tequila Factory is worth a stop while you’re in Puerto Peñasco.

We went with a group of friends, and it turned out to be a really fun experience. They walk you through different tequila tastings and cocktails while explaining how tequila is made, but it’s not overly formal.  The whole presentation feels relaxed and entertaining.

The hosts definitely make it memorable. There’s a lot of personality involved, and it feels more like a fun group experience than a typical tasting.

This is a good option if:

• You enjoy tequila or want to learn more about it
• You’re traveling with friends or a group
• You’re looking for something social and interactive

While you’re there, it’s also worth trying Bacanora, a regional spirit from the Sonoran Desert that you don’t see as often outside the area.

33.  Visit The Seashell Museum

If you’re looking for something a little different, the Seashell Museum is one of the more unique stops in Puerto Peñasco.

The collection is the work of Naomi Black, who has been gathering seashells for over 20 years. When you walk through, it feels more like a personal passion project than a traditional museum, with displays that highlight both the variety and beauty of shells from the region and beyond.

Naomi herself is part collector, artist, and entrepreneur, and her personality really comes through in the space.

There’s also a small gift shop where you can pick up seashell-inspired souvenirs that are a bit more unique than what you’ll find in the typical tourist shops.

This is a good option if:

• You enjoy smaller, off-the-beaten-path attractions
• You’re interested in local art and collections
• You want something quick and different to add to your day

It’s not a large stop, but it’s one of those places that adds a little character to your trip.

Events and Festivals in Puerto Peñasco

If your trip lines up with one of Puerto Peñasco’s festivals or events, it can add a completely different experience to your visit.

Throughout the year, the town hosts everything from food festivals to concerts and large community events.

34.  Attend the Seafood Festival (February)

This was easily one of the tastiest events we’ve experienced in Puerto Peñasco.

Local restaurants set up booths and serve a variety of seafood dishes, so you can try a little bit of everything in one place. It’s not just about the food either — the whole area turns into a lively event with music, dancing, and a great atmosphere.

It takes place around Plaza del Camarón and usually happens in mid-February.
 

35. Go to Circus Mexicus (June)

Circus Mexicus has grown into a major multi-day music event that takes over Puerto Peñasco each summer.

What started as a smaller gathering is now a full concert experience featuring Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers along with other artists. It draws a big crowd and has a strong Arizona following.

This is a good option if:

• You enjoy live music
• You’re looking for a high-energy event
• You want a more social, festival-style experience

36. Experience Spring Break (March)

March brings Spring Break crowds to Puerto Peñasco, and the atmosphere changes quite a bit during this time.

Because it’s within driving distance of Phoenix and Tucson, it becomes a popular destination for college students. The nightlife gets busier, especially downtown, and the overall vibe is much more high-energy.

If you’re looking for a quieter trip, you can still find calmer areas around Sandy Beach resorts or Cholla Bay.

37. Attend the Rocky Point Motorcycle Rally (November)

The Rocky Point Motorcycle Rally brings in riders from all over for a weekend of events and entertainment.

There’s usually a bike parade, live music, and different activities happening throughout town. Even if you’re not a biker, it’s still a fun event to experience.

38. Watch Southern Arizona Desert Racing

If you’re into motorsports, Southern Arizona Desert Racing (SADR) hosts several race weekends throughout the year.

You can watch ATVs, motorcycles, and off-road vehicles racing through the desert, with pre-race events and gatherings leading up to the main races.

It’s a different side of Puerto Peñasco that you don’t see in the typical beach activities.
